Background
Many of you will be aware of the recent devastating attacks against Christians in Jaranwala, Faisalabad district that, as followers of Jesus, demands our immediate attention. 'Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering' (Hebrews 13:3). Despite the severity of the situation, mainstream media has been slow to respond. However, thanks to social media and updates from Links' partners out on the ground, we have the opportunity to raise awareness and take action.
For those only just becoming aware, on August 16th a horrifying incident unfolded in Jaranwala. Christians living in the area became the target of an attack following an unfounded accusation against two young believers of Quran descent. The scale and quick escalation of the attack was shocking with over 24 churches vandalised and burned, and over 300 homes destroyed; even graves were desecrated.
The attack on believers in Jaranwala was marked by chaos and violence. Bibles were burned, crosses were destroyed, and the entire community was left traumatised. The impact of this violence extends beyond the destruction of buildings; schools and businesses have been forced to close, and the government had to impose a seven-day curfew to restore order.
Many have been forced to leave their homes, resulting in displacement and loss of belongings. Desperate for shelter, some have found refuge with friends or family while others have been left to sleep rough in fields, vulnerable and exposed, only to eventually return to find that they have lost everything.
Links' Response
In the face of this crisis, our Links' partners responded swiftly. Working alongside the Punjab Police, they visited the sites affected by the attacks, witnessing the extent of the devastation first hand. Shocked by the damage they saw, they were able to quickly engage with the urgent needs for support.
We cannot remain silent while our brothers and sisters suffer. It is essential that we stand with the local believers and church leaders in Jaranwala. We can show our support by offering prayers for their safety and restoration. Additionally, we can make a real, tangible difference by donating to the work of Links' partners in Pakistan. You can either use our online donation form, specifying that you want your donation to go to the needs in Pakistan, or you can reach out to us on hello@links.charity for more information on how to directly contribute.
We are so grateful for your love and partnership in addressing this crisis. Together, we can bring hope, aid and relief to the affected communities. We pray for God's intervention and the transformation of Pakistan through His love and truth. Through our efforts, we can bring comfort to the persecuted churches in Pakistan and help our brothers and sisters rebuild their lives.
