In a rural corner of South Asia, where disability often means isolation, shame or exclusion, a rare and radiant gathering recently took place. Hosted by South Asia Access (an Act4You account) in partnership with Joni and Friends, a U.S.-based Christian non-profit dedicated to serving families affected by disability, the International Family Retreat became a sacred space of rest, restoration and radical belonging.

Over the course of four days, 81 guests from 23 families were welcomed into a joyful community centered on Jesus. These families, many of whom rarely get the chance to travel together or attend events due to stigma or caregiving responsibilities, found themselves surrounded by love, laughter, and shared purpose.
“This was the first time our whole family could come out together,” one mother shared. “Usually someone has to stay home with our son. But this time, we stayed four nights together. My younger children were so happy—they sang, listened to Bible stories, and joined in every activity. It was such a blessing.”
The retreat was made possible by 31 dedicated volunteers from seven local churches, who partnered with South Asia Access staff to serve, encourage, and celebrate these families. Together they shared Bible stories, played games, sang, danced, prayed, and listened as parents opened up about their challenges—many for the first time.

“This retreat was a powerful demonstration of what happens when you build a community centered on Christ,” said the ministry’s director. “It wasn’t just an event. It was a glimpse of the Kingdom—a place where everyone belongs, where disability doesn’t disqualify anyone from joy or purpose.”
For families who often hear “Don’t bring your disabled child,” the retreat’s open arms and inclusive spirit sent a clear message: you are welcome here—every one of you.
Beyond the fun and fellowship, the retreat reflected South Asia Access’s broader mission: to equip local churches and communities with the tools to practice disability-inclusive development, community-based rehabilitation, and Gospel-centered empowerment. With 80% of the world’s disabled population living in low-income countries, the need for this kind of ministry is urgent—and growing.
At its heart, South Asia Access is about more than programs—it’s about people. And for these 23 families, the retreat was more than a getaway. It was a taste of belonging. A witness to the unconditional love of God. And a reminder that in the Body of Christ, no one is left out.
