Inua Advocacy: A Lifeline for Refugees in Malawi

June 2, 2026

Inua Advocacy is one of our incredible Act4You accounts based in Malawi. In a system where many refugees face restrictions on work, movement and integration, organisations like Inua provide vital support.

Working in and around Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Inua has spent years defending the rights, dignity and protection of refugees and asylum seekers. Today, however, the organisation is facing one of its greatest challenges.
A Difficult Moment
Due to ongoing financial pressures and a lack of sustainable funding, Inua Advocacy has been forced to reduce its operations.

Its Lilongwe office will close at the end of June 2026, and staffing levels will be significantly reduced. For refugees in Malawi, this means fewer places to turn when facing injustice, discrimination and uncertainty.
Why Their Work Matters
Inua Advocacy has become a powerful voice for refugee rights in Malawi.

The organisation provides legal assistance, advocates for policy reform, supports community leaders and responds to human rights concerns. Their work has also contributed to discussions around reforming Malawi's Refugees Act to promote greater dignity, inclusion and opportunity.

For many refugees, Inua is a trusted source of support, guidance and protection.
The Human Cost of Funding Shortfalls
The current funding crisis will have a significant impact.

Legal assistance services, which have helped countless refugees defend their rights, will be affected, as will Inua's work responding to human trafficking and other human rights violations.

Despite these challenges, the organisation remains committed to advocating for refugee rights and promoting more inclusive refugee policies.
Refusing to Give Up
Founded by Innocent Magambi, who was born and raised as a refugee, Inua Advocacy is rooted in lived experience and a belief that everyone deserves dignity and opportunity.

Even during this difficult period, the organisation remains hopeful that, with support from partners and donors, it can continue its mission.
How We Can Help
Inua Advocacy's situation highlights both the importance of grassroots organisations and how vulnerable they can be when funding disappears.

Their work has supported refugees through legal challenges, human rights abuses and displacement. Now, they need support themselves. As they navigate this difficult chapter, we stand in solidarity with Inua Advocacy and the communities they serve.

Every refugee deserves dignity. Every voice deserves to be heard. And every organisation fighting for justice deserves the opportunity to continue its work.
