In Malawi over a decade ago, in a small rural community, Links took a chance on what many thought was just a fad - moringa trees, sensationalised at the time as 'Miracle Trees'. Packed with vitamins and minerals, edible for both humans and livestock, fast‑growing and hardy in hot climates, these trees seemed to have real potential.
From Scepticism to Impact
Many of our partners were sceptical at first, but they began growing seedlings and using the leaves and pods to supplement nutrition in feeding programmes and health initiatives. They also added moringa to livestock feed. Soon, they saw the impact - healthier children and adults, stronger pigs and goats, and improved meat and milk production.
The miracle tree grows up to six feet a year, making it quick to harvest and easy to expand. One partner in Zambia even saw a community begin bottling up this miracle powder and selling both the powder and seedlings. We love when one idea brings holistic impact across multiple core areas, in this case Health, Business, and even Justice through access to improved nutrition.
Still Growing, Still Giving
Moringa remains one of the ideas we encourage to confront poverty. Recently, Abundant Life Center in Malawi planted 200 moringa trees across their four community centres. These leaves will supplement feed for their widow‑empowerment pig project and enrich the weekly feeding programme for hundreds of children.
What once seemed like a fad still brings impact - because it works. It’s cheap, accessible, and can be implemented right at the point of need.
Want to support a simple, holistic innovation that reduces poverty and unlocks potential?
Moringa trees are just one of the many Links Gifts you can give to make a direct, lasting impact.

Stepping into Ghana for the very first time felt like walking back into the roots of Links International’s story. It was here, over 40 years ago, that our founders Norman and Grace Barnes first connected with inspiring missionaries and began building the partnerships that would shape Links’ mission.
