The Hand Up Appeal: From Crisis Response to Lasting Transformation

Over recent months, our partners have been responding to a number of devastating crises around the world, including earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia, flooding in Pakistan, and severe flooding and landslides in Nepal. In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, emergency relief is essential. It saves lives, provides shelter, delivers food and clean water and brings hope when people have lost almost everything. But at Links, we believe our responsibility does not end when the headlines fade. Our vision is to help communities move from aid to empowerment, from relief to rehabilitation and from recovery to sustainable development. While emergency support provides a vital lifeline, lasting transformation comes when people are given opportunities to rebuild livelihoods, generate income and restore dignity.

That is why the business and enterprise side of our work is so important!

Across the world, we see courageous individuals determined to rebuild their lives in the face of adversity and poverty. Through our Micro-Enterprise Development programmes and community-based income-generating projects, we help provide the skills, resources and support that enable families to create sustainable futures.

We believe God's anointing is upon business and enterprise as a powerful tool for transformation. Scripture reminds us:

"Remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth."

Deuteronomy 8:18

And again:

"May the favour of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us, yes, establish the work of our hands."(Psalm 90:17)

Jesus Himself chose many of His disciples not from the scholarly elite, but from the marketplace. Fishermen, tradesmen and a tax collector were among those He called. They understood hard work, initiative, responsibility and perseverance. They were people who recognised opportunities where others saw obstacles. This entrepreneurial mindset remains vital today. In communities facing poverty, disaster and uncertainty, we have repeatedly seen stumbling blocks become stepping stones. Small businesses become sources of income. Skills become opportunities. Hope becomes reality.

A handout may help someone survive today. A hand up can help transform generations.

Through Links' business initiatives, we have witnessed families start micro-businesses, farmers increase production, community cafés create employment, technology hubs open new opportunities and local enterprises strengthen entire communities. This is why the Hand Up Appeal matters so much.

Our goal is to raise £20,000 in committed ongoing giving to expand this essential area of our work and establish sustainable pathways out of poverty for communities around the world.
