United in Purpose: What the World Cup Teaches Us About Our Mission

July 1, 2026

Every few years the world pauses to watch something extraordinary. Flags wave, anthems rise and nations pour onto the global stage in a celebration of colour, culture and collective hope. The World Cup becomes a glimpse of what happens when tribes, tongues and nations gather around a shared purpose.

It’s striking how much this mirrors the heartbeat of Scripture. The Apostle John, writing from exile, opens Revelation with a sweeping vision, that many scholars have pointed out, mirrors the prologue to an ancient Olympic ceremony. In the Roman world, emperors used stadium spectacles to display power and glory. John subverts that imagery. He lifts our eyes to a greater throne, a truer King and a global multitude crying out in worship, not coerced by empire but captivated by love.

After this, I looked; and there before me was a huge crowd, too large for anyone to count, from every nation, tribe, people and language. They were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hands; and they shouted,

“Victory to our God,
who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb!”

(Rev 7:9-10)
And in that vision, we see something profoundly relevant to our mission at Links International.

The World Cup reminds us that people long to belong to something bigger than themselves. They want to represent well. They want to give their all. They want to stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with others who share their passion. That same longing is woven into our calling as agents of the Kingdom of God - a Kingdom where every nation is invited, every voice is welcomed, and every person carries God‑given potential.

At Links, this is why we exist:

To connect people across borders, cultures and contexts.
To confront poverty with courage, creativity and compassion.
To create potential by empowering local leaders to flourish.

When we partner with organisations and communities around the world, we’re not just running programmes, we’re joining world changers, a global movement that reflects the very heart of Revelation’s vision. We are a people gathered, with a purpose shared and a King to be celebrated.

So as you watch the matches this month, the drama, the unity, the passion, may we allow it to stir something deeper. May it remind us that we are part of a far greater story, one where every act of generosity, every prayer, every partnership advances the Kingdom and lifts another person into their God‑given future.

This is our calling. This is our joy. And this is our worship.

It reminds us that mission isn’t something a few specialists do 'over there', it’s the calling of the whole Church, the whole people of God, joining His work of restoring shalom on earth as in Heaven.
