As part of Links' aim to empower our partners to become more self-sustaining through larger income-generating community projects, we have been helping to resource and train our partners in fruit plantations, especially the growing of bananas in Malawi.
This month we gathered the Malawian partners in Lilongwe to do site farm visits together, to learn from one another the successes and challenges of maintaining and expanding banana plantations. Through using solar irrigation systems, the bananas receive the right amount of water and nutrients direct to each plant and therefore increase their yield, see a reduction in disease and utilise less water overall.
Bananas suffered greatly, over five years ago, from a disease in Malawi, and the market is still importing a lot of fruit when there is now potential to grow so much within the fertile borders of the nation. The partners will harvest and sell the bananas to the vast local markets to sustain their farms, but also use the profits to develop their community programmes and trainings.
We are going bananas together - but in a sustainable and impactful way! Partner through Links with such organisations like FESDOEV, Hope Missions and Seeds of Promise, who are bringing homegrown potential back into their visions for community transformation.
